Which food Can you Buy with SNAP benefits?
H.Households CAN use SNAP benefits to purchase:
- Eating foods for household use, such as:
- Breads and cereals;
- Fruits and vegetables;
- Meat, fish and poultry; and
- Dairy products.
- Seeds and plants that produce food for the household.
In addition, energy drinks with a nutrition label are permitted as food. Live seafood such as lobster, fish and shellfish can also be purchased with SNAP benefits.
Households can NOT use the SNAP benefits to purchase:
- Beer, wine, schnapps, cigarettes or tobacco
- All non-food items like:
- Pet food
- Soap
- Paper products
- Housewares
- Vitamins and medicines
- Food to be eaten in the store
- Warm food.
Items such as birthday and other cakes for special occasions can be purchased with SNAP benefits as long as the value of inedible decorations does not exceed 50 percent of the purchase price of the cake.
